Chosing a Software Name

Choosing a software name may not be as easy as it sounds. It is actually one of the most difficult marketing tasks and the one that can cause many arguments inside a company (before and after the launch of the product).

A good product name, as they say, is advertising in itself so it should not be left totally to chance.

I recently discovered the most complete report on naming and branding so feel free to peruse it before you decide on a software name.

Webtrends Pushed to WebPosition Gold Users

Some Webposition Gold users may have been a bit surprised to receive yesterday's email from WPG informing them about the new and wonderful Webtrends 7. The fact is that netIQ, the company behind the Webtrends suites have purchased WebPosition Gold a few months ago (as we reported back then) and are now using the WPG database in order to promote WebTrends.

The integration of search engine metrics (and optimization) and website statistics is a very interesting issue that I am sure we will see a lot more of this soon, than simply a merge of the customer email databases.

Shareware Time Limitation

There is a very interesting poll on download.com over the past few days on the most fair number of days that shareware should have as a free trial. The results as they stand now after nearly 13000 votes exhibit a very clear win of the 30 day full feature trial.

There are many more parameters involved in this but this is definitely something you should be aware of when you are trying to find the best tactics for selling your shareware.
